AMAS Marian Association for Social Assistance
Is a nonprofit foundation with legal status since 1978 and revalidated as such in 2019. AMAS directs all its efforts towards the Aldea Cristo Rey or Christ The King Village, which houses children and adolescents from scarce economic backgrounds that have lost their natural family and live in social orphanhood.
As Catholic volunteers, conscious of our mission as God’s instruments, we are committed to working with Christ The King Village, which constitutes a second opportunity for all children to experience happiness, shelter and support, economically and personally, so they can grow and develop to their maximum potential in a loving environment.
The Board of Directors is a fundamental part of our foundation for it helps coordinate and organize volunteer efforts. Its members have a two year tenure.
How was AMAS born?
Guillermito (Little William) was born in 1961, the son of Pepe and Piedad Burbano, and died tragically at 12 years old.
This life called to fulfillment at such young age, inspired his mother Piedad, who was engulfed in pain over the loss of her son, to found AMAS (Asociacion Mariana de Ayuda Social – Marian Association of Social Assistance) that would work, from that moment forward, at the service of the children of the Christ The King Village as its life mission.
She understood, through Guillermito’s passing, the commandment of love towards all of those in need.
That is where we come from and where we strive to always be.
That’s how AMAS was born.
The Village currently provides 43 children, living in social orphanhood, with housing, food, clothing, health and education as part of its unique organization. Children who come to the Village live in social orphanhood due to abandonment of one or both parents, neglect, abuse, poverty, substance abuse, social and family problems or unwanted pregnancy.
Its work methodology consists on allowing children the experience of a conventional family structure, thus, they are all placed in small houses where they live with other children and an “Aunt” that will fulfill the functions of a mother attending to their emotional and physical needs. We currently have 8 houses in total.
